DELF, DALF, or TCF: The ABCs of French language certifications
Before you start studying, the big question is: which exam do you really need? Here’s a simple explanation to help you choose the right path.
DELF: The lifetime certificate
The Diploma in French Language Studies, or DELF, is an official certification issued by the French Ministry of National Education. Once you obtain it, it never expires and is recognized worldwide.
Levels: Ranges from A1 to B2.
What can I use it for? With a B2, you can enter almost any university in France, be part of la vie à la française, and even begin the process of obtaining citizenship.
DALF: The advanced level
Like the DELF, the Advanced Diploma in French Language Studies (DALF) is issued by the French Ministry of National Education, is valid for life, and is recognized worldwide.
Levels: C1 and C2
What can I use it for? It is the master key to demanding postgraduate programs, doctorates, and management positions in European companies. It shows that you can discuss complex topics with complete fluency.
TCF Canada: The north’s favorite
Unlike the previous ones, the Test of Knowledge in French or TCF is not a diploma, but a level test. The big difference is that it is valid for two years and therefore has an expiration date.
Levels: You can obtain a score from A1 to C2, depending on the score you achieve.
What can I use it for? It is ideal for immigration processes in Canada, especially for obtaining permanent residence in the country.
So which one should you choose?
If you want a permanent academic or professional certification, go for the DELF/DALF. If you need a quick document to immigrate to Canada, the TCF is your best bet.
